Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to contest particular decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
