The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
